The International Tour Management Institute (ITMI), founded in 1976, is widely recognized as (one of) the premier training organizations for tour professionals in the world and is the oldest institute of its kind in the United States. Based in San Francisco, ITMI has spent decades developing and refining an immersive approach to training Tour Directors, Tour Guides, and Cruise Hosts.
The institute’s programs combine online instruction with real-world field experience, focusing on essential skills such as storytelling, group management, cultural interpretation, guest engagement, and group travel logistics. Along each student’s journey, instructors are there to guide the way, and once graduated, mentors and the ITMI’s dedicated staff are there to offer support and assistance … for life.
Over the years, ITMI has prepared thousands of graduates for successful careers across the global travel industry, developing a reputation built not only on the quality of its instruction, but also on the strength of its professional network and the enduring support it offers its alumni.
“People are drawn to the front-lines of tourism from all walks of life. Some know from an early age that it is their calling, others come to it later in life. I fall somewhere in the middle, having come from a career in Training Management and Instructional Design with a multinational, multilingual background.
The certification I gained through ITMI in both Tour Guiding and Tour Directing helped launch my career. The real difference, however, was the ITMI’s professional network, especially the connections of its founder, Ted Bravos. It took just one introduction to the right person to set me on a path.
As my journey continues to unfold, I have returned to the ITMI, not as a student but as an instructor, a privilege that allows me to help guide a new generation into what Ted has long called one of the world’s noble professions.”
